Just had some great news about the go ahead for a new education project based in Aberdyfi, Gwynedd. Mid Wales Youth Jazz will cater for 10-18 year olds in South Gwynedd and Powys and will run once a month on Sundays, starting 10/2.
I will be working on a range of material, generally by ear; but with an emphasis on improvisation and the fun of group playing. No previous experience necessary – just open ears and open minds! Funded by ACW (and many thanks to the Peter Saunders Trust for funding the schools taster day www.petersaunderstrust.co.uk ) there is also the opportunity for me to bring in other musicians/groups for some of the sessions. We hope to present a concert in June or July to showcase the results of our first few sessions. All in all, an exciting venture!
This should be particularly exciting for this under represented part of rural Wales, and also is the direct result of the actions and perseverance of two local women (and parents) Katie Morgan and Nicola Burgess. I think it just goes to show that with vision and hard work, these kinds of projects can be turned from dreams into reality, anywhere!
If any young musicians are interested in participating in Mid Wales Youth Jazz, please email me firstname.lastname@example.org and I’ll pass your details onto the organisers.
