“I honestly can’t remember the last time I saw a live performance in which two artists were so completely attuned to each other”. Jazzwise
Maria Pia de Vito (born in Naples) is one of Europe’s foremost vocalists. She consistently tops the Italian Jazz vocalists poll, and has collaborated with musicians such as John Taylor, Ralph Towner, Rita Marcotulli, Danilo Rea, Joe Zawinul, Michael Brecker, Steve Turre, and the Art Ensemble of Chicago. She has studied Jazz, Mediterranean, Balkan, Carnatic and Classical vocal techniques and integrates live electronics into her work. She is increasingly involved in the Brazilian music scene, translating lyrics into Neaplolitan of Chico Buarque, as well as performing with Guinga and Ivan Lins, and has also recorded a project for ECM based around the music of Pergolesi.
Sunday 11/8 – Castle Hotel 1.30pm

Jim Black    drums/electronics
“where the unexpected meets the unclassifiable” Mojo
An exclusive premiere for Brecon, and a rare UK appearance for NY drummer Jim Black. Jim Black is at the forefront of a new generation of musicians reshaping jazz in the 21st century.  One of the most influential drummers in the world, his aesthetic includes Balkan rhythms, rock songcraft and laptop soundscapes. As well as leading his own band “Alas No Axis” he has worked closely with the leading lights of the downtown scene such as Tim Berne, Chris Speed, Ellery Eskelin, Chris Speed and Uri Caine. Based on the foundation of his virtuosic but highly personal approach to jazz drumming, what many listeners treasure most in Jim Black’s work is the relentless feeling of joy and invention he brings to his performances.
Sunday 11/8 – Brecon Cathedral 8pm
