‘If you don’t like this you don’t deserve ears.’ VOX

A defining band of the past 20 years, they perform for the first time for nearly a decade for a special show at the Vortex.

Renowned for crossover projects with the likes of violinist Andrew Manze, the Orlando Consort and virtuoso recorder player Pamela Thorby, they are both adventurous and accessible. By now they are really a supergroup. For example, Mark Lockheart is known as a member of Loose Tubes and Polar Bear, Huw Warren for the award-winning Quercus and highly imaginative reworkings of Hermeto Pascoal, Tim Giles has won a BBC Jazz Award and is a member of groups such as Twelves and Fraud. Dudley Phillips has contributed to a large body of recorded work, from albums on the legendary Blue Note label to EMI classics, working with many major artists including Robert Wyatt, Bill Withers, Mark Knopfler, June Tabor, Cedar Walton, Marc Almond, John Harle, Tim Robbins, and Amy Winehouse.

As well as old favourites they will be including some brand new material.

A Celebration Of John Taylor

Friday November 27th, Milton Court Concert Hall

Guildhall Big Band directed by Scott Stroman with Huw Warren (piano)The Guildhall Big Band celebrates the pianist’s life with a programme of his own music and compositions by some of his closest musical associates

John Taylor , who died suddenly in July of this year, was one of the UK’s most influential jazz musicians. Across a 45-year career as a musician, composer and educator he played with a diverse array of singers and players including Alan Skidmore, Cleo Laine, Norma Winstone and Lee Konitz.

Taylor’s discography extends to over 80 albums: his working relationship with Kenny Wheeler was especially fruitful. In his work as a teacher Taylor also helped many musicians to develop their talents.

To celebrate Taylor’s life and career the Guildhall Big Band, directed by Scott Stroman, will be performing a special concert on Friday 27 November. The venue is the Guildhall School’s Milton Court Concert Hall in London’s Barbican Centre.

When the concert was originally planned it was intended to feature Taylor himself. The celebration concert will feature guest pianist Huw Warren  who first met Taylor at a Guildhall Summer School in the 1980s. The programme will include Taylor’s own compositions as well as work by musicians who have been associated with him.

Tickets for the event cost £15.00 (£10.00 concessions). Bookings can be made at the Barbican Box Office (020 7638 8891) or online at the Barbican website.
